Overasselt security guard was not to be at work the night of the murder

Saturday, 10 October 2026 - 10:35
A number of details about the deadly Overasselt shooting have emerged more than a month after it took place. For example, the murdered security guard Berry was hired last minute and was not supposed to be at the location that day. He had also suspected that something was wrong after noticing men monitoring the house prior to his murder. It has also been identified that eight of the more than 30 suspects are from Amsterdam, while three more were arrested on Friday near Ghent.
The three new suspects are 23, 35, and 28 years old, all from the Ghent area. They are suspected of murder, manslaughter, firearm possession, and membership in a criminal organization.
In addition to the latest arrests, three homes and a warehouse in the area were also searched. Data storage devices and vehicles, including a Range Rover, were seized.
One of the suspects said in a police statement that a Range Rover carrying weapons was present at the Belgian warehouse on the night before the murder. It is unclear whether that was the confiscated vehicle.
It has also been reported that Jan G. had arranged the security last minute after earlier requests went unfilled. The company owner had planned to take the job at G.’s farm himself, but Berry - who had just finished his security training - ended up there after swapping shifts with his boss. Berry was originally scheduled for a job near the German border; the Overasselt assignment was simply closer to his home in Wijchen.
In the early hours of September 1, a large group of heavily armed men walked along the Ewijkseweg in Overasselt. They were heading for the home of the 28-year-old convicted drug criminal Jan G. when they encountered the 51-year-old Berry. He was then shot.
Berry had allegedly sensed prior to his murder that something was wrong. According to NU.nl, he had presumably seen a video from G.’s security cameras in which two men can be seen lingering outside G.’s home late at night. After the owner of the security company asked Berry later if everything was quiet in Overasselt, he said no, forwarding the footage of two men in hoodies. “I think they are the same ones as earlier this week,” the boss replied.
At 4:04 a.m., Berry allegedly called his employer, yelling, “They are shooting.” His boss shouted in response, "Goddamn it, get out of there! Get out, now!”
Two days earlier, G. had also allegedly seen two men walking around on his phone that was linked to his security cameras. His house had reportedly been shot at prior.
Based on camera footage, police believe three people fired at the security guard. According to the AD, they are Yumuk S., Roberto M., and Omar D. The five Amsterdamers are 20 years old. The others are 19, 23, and 25.
Some have already been suspected of serious crimes in the past, Het Parool reported. These include violent crimes, drug-related crimes, and weapons offenses, as well as involvement in a fatal sex offense incident.
