A fire at the Amsterdam Olympic Stadium caused a lot of smoke over the Dutch capital on Thursday evening. Firefighters had a hard time reaching the source of the fire, and it took over six hours to get it under control. The extent of the damage is not yet known.

The fire broke out at around 6:30 p.m. in a crawl space of the parking garage located under the stadium. The fire brigade responded in large numbers. “The need to preserve the historic building as much as possible was a key factor in the decision to scale up the response significantly,” Veiligheidsregio Amsterdam-Amstelland reported.

Firefighters entered the building wearing breathing apparatus and had to rotate crews regularly because the conditions inside were intense. The source of the fire was difficult to access. Firefighters used foam and closed the doors around it to restrict the fire’s oxygen supply and stop it from spreading further.

The fire released a lot of smoke. The fire brigade measured no harmful substances in it, but still urged locals to stay out of the smoke and close their windows and doors.

Over six hours later, at 00:38 a.m., the Veiligheidsregio reported that the fire was finally under control. “Emergency services are scaling back their operations and gradually leaving the site,” said the Veiligheidsregio, the office that manages the region’s emergency services, among other things.

People with cars parked in the garage were told to contact the operator for information on when they can retrieve their vehicle.
