KLM has announced that it will introduce free high-speed Wi-Fi on its intercontinental flights, using SpaceX's Starlink. KLM describes it as "ultra-fast" Wi-Fi and says passengers will have fast and unlimited internet access.

“We are making a long-standing wish of our passengers a reality: fast, free Wi-Fi on intercontinental flights starting in mid-2027. This will allow passengers to stay connected even high above the ocean. The introduction of free Wi-Fi is part of KLM’s continued efforts to provide its passengers with a comfortable, digitally connected travel experience,” CEO Marjan Rintel said.

That means KLM's intended service will support things such as browsing the web, sending and receiving emails, WhatsApp and other messaging, and streaming films and TV series. Since January 22, KLM has been introducing free internet on its European fleet.

The free service will be available to Flying Blue members. You will be able to log in with your Flying Blue account once onboard. If you're not already a Flying Blue member, KLM says you can sign up before the flight or even while onboard and then use the free Wi-Fi on aircraft equipped with the service.

Traditional aircraft Wi-Fi often uses either ground-based air-to-ground networks or satellites in geostationary orbit. Starlink uses a large constellation of low-Earth-orbit satellites.

That allows much lower latency than traditional satellite internet, resulting in higher potential speeds. Starlink says its aviation service provides global coverage, including international waters and polar regions.

Starlink is a satellite internet service operated by SpaceX, the aerospace company founded and led by Elon Musk. The founder has become increasingly involved in politics over the years, including publicly supporting Donald Trump and other right-wing political causes.
