Another housing protest will take place on the Dam Square in Amsterdam on Saturday at 2 p.m. It will run under the slogan “houses for people, not for profit” in order to draw attention to the ongoing housing crisis.

In September, the Dutch Housing Minister Elanor Boehol-O’Sullivan published a 50-point plan on how to combat the prolonged housing shortage. It was denounced shortly after by the key associations representing both tenants and private landlords. According to the minister, 7 billion euros will be allocated for the affordable housing construction.

Earlier in May, the International Monetary Fund said that the Netherlands needs tougher housing reforms, including changes to rental market regulations. It warned that the supply constraints and high prices were making the housing shortage worse.

Then later, ING concluded in its report that although the number of homes for sale is rising in the Netherlands, so are the interest rates. So home prices are not expected to drop any time soon, the researchers found. “The buyer’s marker is still too tight for this,” the bank said in September.
